While we know that laundry is one of your daily or weekly tasks, there are small yet important steps that you should take to ensure that you are using and storing laundry detergent properly. Follow the tips below every time you do the laundry:

Store laundry products appropriately.

• Keep laundry products out of children’s reach.
• Remember to keep products in their original container with the label intact and immediately put them away in the appropriate place after use.

Pay attention during use.

• Be sure to follow all recommended product instructions, and pay particularly close attention to all ‘Caution’, ‘Warning’, ‘Danger’, or ‘Poison’ statements.
• Never combine laundry detergents with ammonia or other household cleaning agents because some chemical mixtures may release irritating gases.
• Remember to clean up any spills, and immediately wash your hands and any utensils used to dispense or measure products.
• Ensure your full attention while using laundry and cleaning products, by taking care of these chores during your child’s downtime, such as naptime.

Dispose of products correctly.

• To protect children, pets and garbage handlers, remember to re-cap the bottle before throwing away or recycling.
• Never use empty detergent containers for storage of any other materials, especially for anything intended for human consumption.

Know who to call.

Know what to do before unintended exposure happens. Read product safety information provided on the package.

Unintended exposure with laundry products usually causes no serious medical effects. If in eye(s), rinse immediately with plenty of water for 15 minutes and seek medical advice, as needed. If on skin or clothing, remove contaminated clothing and rinse skin well with water. If swallowed, drink a glass of water or milk and contact the Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) or doctor immediately. Do not induce vomiting.
